Joyce Allison Chan
Driven by a profound belief in the transformative power of fashion education, my mission is to ignite creativity and inspire the next generation of designers to reach their full potential.
Graduated with First Class Honors from Central Saint Martins, my BA in Fashion Design provided the foundation for my creative expertise. Further studies in MA Fashion Design and MA Innovation Management expanded my understanding of fashion education and enriched my approach to teaching.
For the past 18 years, I’ve had the privilege of working across Canada, the UK, France, Japan, China, and Hong Kong. This global experience has enriched my teaching, allowing me to blend industry insights with academic innovation. In my previous academic leadership role, I worked closely with the University of the Arts London (UAL) on designing and developing advanced Art and Design curricula, ensuring the programs upheld the highest standards of creative expression and academic rigor.
Throughout my career, I’ve taught a wide variety of courses—from high school visual arts programs to undergraduate preparation courses like the BTEC Foundation Diplomas in Arts, Design, and Media, as well as postgraduate preparation programs. I remain deeply committed to nurturing young talent and helping students realize their creative ambitions.
Over the years, I have guided more than 750 aspiring creatives to a 98% success rate in gaining admission to prestigious institutions such as Central Saint Martins, London College of Fashion, Chelsea College of Art & Design, and Parsons School of Design. My mentorship goes beyond portfolio building—I focus on developing essential skills such as research, creative process, and idea generation, all of which are critical for long-term success in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
My fashion career bridges both industry and academic innovation, encompassing roles in design, show production, and brand development. Professional collaborations with brands and designers from Givenchy, Roksanda, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, Catherine Brickhill, and L’Oréal, alongside contributions to London Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Weeks, highlight my adaptability in high-end fashion. As a committee member of the UAL Canadian Alumni, I am passionate about fostering a vibrant creative community and amplifying our collective impact within the global arts and design industries.
Teaching Philosophy
My approach to portfolio building is centered around recognizing and nurturing each student’s unique talents and aspirations.
Rather than dictating steps, I guide students through creative development, critical thinking, and research, emphasizing the creative process and idea development to help them showcase their true potential.
The goal is to uncover and cultivate individual strengths, tailoring guidance to fit each student's specific needs. By fostering personal growth and passion, I help students apply to institutions where they will truly excel. This approach not only enhances their chances of acceptance but also sets them on a path to long-term success in their fashion careers.
Seeing my students succeed is the most rewarding part of my work.
Having navigated the challenging path to top-tier fashion institutions myself, I understand the dedication and creativity required. I'm committed to helping my students not only meet but exceed their goals.
